What Counts as an Emergency?

Merewether Plumbing Co handles the jobs that cannot sit until business hours. The calls break into a few familiar groups:

  • Burst pipes and blown flexible hoses flooding kitchens, laundries and under-floor spaces
  • Sewers backing up into showers, toilets and gully traps, sometimes across more than one home on a shared run
  • Hot water failures, from rooftop tanks letting go to units that quit without warning
  • Gas smells and suspected leaks, which we treat as urgent every single time
  • Storm-driven overflows, when a coastal downpour surcharges drains faster than they can clear

If you are unsure whether your job counts as urgent, ring anyway and describe it, and the plumber on the line works out whether it needs someone tonight.

Burst Pipe? What to Do First

Most of the damage from a burst line happens before help reaches the property, so what you do while the van is coming matters more than anything else.

Then ring us. On a night job we will say on the phone whether the repair looks on-the-spot or needs a part ordered, and we will make the line safe either way.

How an After-Hours Call Runs

Every emergency call follows the same short path, whether it is midnight or lunchtime.

  1. 01

    Ring or send the form

Call (02) 4063 1093 or use the form. Tell us what has burst, backed up or stopped working so the van arrives with the right gear.

  2. 02

    Isolate and stop the damage

First on site, the water or gas gets shut off and the fault gets a proper look, not a glance.

  3. 03

    Quote before any repair

You hear the price, including the after-hours rate, before we unpack anything. You decide whether we go ahead.

  4. 04

    Fix and test

The repair gets done, the line gets pressure-tested or camera-checked where it matters, and the water goes back on only when it holds.

What Drives the Price at Night?

What sits behind that price varies from job to job:

  • The hour After-hours work carries a different rate, and we say what it is before anyone leaves, never after.
  • Access A burst line under a Federation cottage with a tight under-floor crawl costs more to reach than one in an open laundry.
  • Pipe material A fractured galvanised line in a pre-1960s home often means more than a patch, because the steel around the split is usually just as far gone.
  • What the fix needs A hose swap, a section replacement or a full reroute are three different jobs, and the quote reflects which one your line actually needs.

Why Night Calls Here Follow a Pattern

The hoses go first

Renovated kitchens and bathrooms through the older flats rely on braided flexible hoses, and they let go when the house is empty. A hose that fails at midday is a flooded floor by dinner.

The old lines go next

The pre-war cottages carry galvanised and earthenware lines that have been quietly rusting and cracking for decades, and they fail on their own schedule, not yours.

Then the storms write their own list

Houses on the flat ground at the bottom of the Scenic Drive hillside cop intense coastal downpours that surcharge older drains and push water up through gully traps, and the low streets feel it first.

When We're Not the Right Call

If the flooding is coming from a burst water main in the road reserve, that belongs to the water authority, and ringing them first stops more damage faster than we can. A fault on the street side of the gas meter belongs to the gas network's emergency line. Everything on your side of those boundaries is ours.

Emergency Questions, Answered

What counts as an emergency worth ringing about at night?

Water you cannot stop, a sewer backing up into the house, a gas smell or no hot water anywhere in the place. A dripping tap can wait for morning. If closing the mains or the isolation valve stops the damage, do that first, then ring and we will step you through anything else worth checking.

Do you charge a call-out fee for emergencies?

It costs nothing to get us out to your door (excluding after-hours). After-hours jobs carry a different rate, and you hear that rate before anyone leaves. The price we quote before starting is the price on the final invoice.

Will a burst pipe get fixed on the night?

Usually, yes. Blown flexible hoses, fractured galvanised pipe and dead hot water units are all night-time jobs, and we bring what is needed to isolate, repair or cap and reroute on the spot. If a full replacement has to wait for parts, we make the line safe and keep water flowing to the rest of the house.

What should I do about a burst pipe before you arrive?

Turn the supply off at the meter or the isolation valve nearest the leak, then open the taps downstream to drain pressure out of the line. Move what you can off wet carpet and, if water is near power points, switch off the circuit at the board. Then ring us with what you have done.
